- Olivia Andrews-Beard
- Adjunct English Instructor
Southern Crescent Technical College, GA
MyWritingLab - Mrs. Olivia Andrews-Beard is an Adjunct English Instructor at Southern Crescent Technical College in Griffin, GA and is known for "thinking outside of the box" in order to reach her students. She believes in creating a stress-free, collaborative learning environment where adult students can overcome their "fear" of the English language. Mrs. Andrews-Beard graduated from North Carolina State University with a Masters of Education degree in Adult & Community College Teaching (2005) and from Tuskegee University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (1996). Before teaching at Southern Crescent, she taught in North Carolina at Durham Technical College (Adult Education Department) and Johnston Community College (Developmental courses), respectively.
- For the last 18 months, she has used MyWritingLab as a supplemental component in all of her English courses at Southern Crescent and feels it has enhanced the learning experience within the classroom. She states, "I have made MyWritingLab a required element of all my classes and students (those that consistently complete the weekly assignments) have really found it to be "the missing link." Their writing skills have drastically improved. I truly believe MyWritingLab helped the majority of my Learning Support students pass their Compass Exit Exams the first time, and currently gives my English Fundamental Hybrid and Online students the immediate feedback they need to recognize their individual writing strengths and weaknesses. MyWritingLab.com is my students' 'stress-free' learning environment online, and I look forward to using it in all my English courses in the future."
- In addition to encouraging students to use MyWritingLab, Mrs. Andrews-Beard continues to share her uses and knowledge of MyWritingLab with fellow co-workers in campus workshops and individual tutoring.
- Courses taught: English 098 (Developmental); English 1010 (Fundamentals of English)
- Course format: Currently teaches Hybrid & Online classes; previously taught Traditional.

Eastern Gateway Community College
MyWritingLab - Dawn Bailey-Cable is an adjunct faculty member and Chief GED Examiner at Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville, OH. Once a high school English teacher, Dawn has been teaching remedial English and Reading courses since 2006. During a curriculum re-design, she worked to integrate four reading and writing courses into two course and added MyWritingLab to each. Her traditional, yet hands-on, classroom that utilizes cooperative learning has seen remarkable improvements in student attendance, success, and retention. MyWritingLab was the missing link!
- She earned her B.S. in Comprehensive Communications Education from Ohio University in Athens, OH. Currently she is completing her Reading Endorsement and Master's degree in Education Administration (almost finished, whew!) from Franciscan University of Steubenville.
- Courses taught: Integrated Reading and Writing I and II; both courses are remedial courses

- Ash Carter
- Student Center Support Manager
San Joaquin Valley College
MyWritingLab - After attending Pepperdine University I began my career working in the college setting by serving in the Residential Life Department of small college in Wyoming. Upon my return to California I took a position as a Professional Development trainer for Tulare County Employees. After some time I transferred into other business ventures and eventually landed as a business instructor with SJVC. I was quickly promoted into the Student Center Coordinator position and managed early retention and student success for one of the campuses in the SJVC family. After only 6 months of success in that position I was promoted into the Student Center Support Manager role where I provide vision and support for all 11 student centers in the SJVC family. On a personal note, I have been married for nearly 6 years and have two beautiful daughters (Maddie and Eva, ages 3 and 2) and another child on the way. When I'm not working or playing with my children I am usually watching hockey or football on TV!
- I have been using MML and MWL in an instructor capacity since December of 2009. I have been using MML and MWL in an administrator capacity since March of 2010. I have been using MyLabsPlus in an administrator capacity since June of 2010.
- Courses taught: Developmental English 0300 and 0310 English Composition I and II Technical Writing
- Course format: Our Math121 course uses the MyMathLab software extensively and I assist instructors in creating, importing, and fully utilizing the labs for course use. My institution uses MML and MWL (and thus MyLabsPlus) for all of our developmental education courses. All incoming students are required to assess in the MyMathLab and MyWritingLab systems and then complete the subsequent study plans (thus fulfilling their developmental education commitment). I have used both stand alone MyMathLab and MyWritingLab courses as well as MyLabsPlus integrated versions of both platforms.

- Curtis Harrell
- Coordinator, Academic Skills Reading and Writing
Northwest Arkansas Community College
MyCompLab, MyReadingLab, MySkillsLab, MyWritingLab - I have been involved with using online supplements in the classroom since the mid-nineties when I developed a website for my classes by hand-coding HTML in SimpleText on my Mac Performa 475. Four megabytes of memory cost $200 down at the local Sears. I have been very glad to see textbook publishers take up the challenge of providing robust online environments for students since then, especially the MyLabs.
- Today I coordinate the developmental reading and writing courses at my college and support the faculty here who use the online supplements as real-time diagnostics to customize the instruction in their classrooms. I work hard to keep current with trends, seeking to combine the instruction of reading and writing, and I share my work at both state and national conferences.
- I received a BFA in Creative Writing from Arkansas Tech University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas, and, in my free time, I enjoy playing and building banjos and riding my antique Harley. In the summers I am a guide at War Eagle Cavern, the coolest job a person can have in Arkansas in June and July.

- Faculty/Adjunct
Colorado Mesa University; Western Colorado Community College
MyWritingLab - I moved from Los Angles, California to Grand Junction, Colorado six years ago—Colorado is an incredible place to live! I have been using MyWritingLab since 2009 at Western Colorado Community College, under the umbrella of Colorado Mesa University.
- I absolutely love using MyWritingLab, because it uses so many options for my non-traditional students and my English Language Learners. The immediate feedback from the MyWritingLab really motivates them. Multimedia for my non-traditional students is great to fill the gap where they may be missing information or having difficulty comprehending English content. Some of my students have jumped 30 points from Pre-Test to Post-Test at the end of the semester. I strive for excellent education for my non-traditional students, and MyWritingLab provides one way to meet that goal.
- Courses taught: English Development; Writing Fundamentals; Basic Writing
- Course format: Lab-based
- Book in use: DJ Henry, Writing for Life: Paragraph to Essay

- Professor of Reading, English, and Psychology
Arizona Western College, Yuma, AZ
MyWritingLab, MyReadingLab - I have a BA in General Studies—Biology, Psychology, and Chemistry/Math split—from the University of Arizona; a post-baccalaureate in secondary education from the University of Arizona; and, a MA—Public Relations in Community College Education with a Photojournalism emphasis—from Northern Arizona University.
- I have taught for over 20 years with 10 of them being at the community college level. I have been a full-time developmental reading instructor at Arizona Western College for a little over five years; and, I can say that I honestly LOVE my job! Recently, I was asked why I teach, "I was one of my students—one who thought she knew how to read, but really didn't have the comprehension strategies necessary to succeed in university courses. I don't want my students to be as I was; I want them to succeed and achieve their dreams and goals and have a leg-up. That is why I exist—I am a ladder rung for them to step on, use, learn from, and attain their goals by climbing onto my shoulders to the next instructor who will take them up a rung or two higher."
- My husband, Rick, and I have been married for 21 years; I have a son, Zane (14); three unofficial adopted Polynesian sons; and, a menagerie of animals including the "love of my life"—my Arabian Horse, Sunny.
- Courses taught: Reading Essentials, Reading Improvement, College Reading Skills, English 95, English 96, Psychology 101, and English as a Second Language Workshop I.
- Course format: Traditional with a creative twist
- Book in use:The Henry series: The Skilled Reader, The Effective Reader, and The Master Reader along with the accompanying Vocabulary Workbooks.
