In a recent survey of MyWritingLab, Pearson asked instructors if they would use MyWritingLab again. Almost 90% told us YES! Here are some highlights of their reasons for continuing with MyWritingLab:
It helps my students. Out of the 16 students who completed the class—15 improved. The one who did not show improvement seldom attended class. On the average my students improved from pre to post test by more than 14%; one student actually went from 56 to 82 and another from a 64 to an 86. But not only did their grammar improve but also their writing did as well. Because they are more confident in their basic grammar skills--and can now punctuate a complex sentence correctly--they feel more confident in their sentence-making and no longer feel the need to "dummy down" their prose just to make sure they don’t have any grammatical errors.
—Richard Dice, Shelton State Community College
I think this is one good way to address the wide range of individual issues with grammar, mechanics, etc. The students ACTUALLY DO the exercises, and I can require proof of mastery.
—John Galligan, Madison Area Technical College
MyWritingLab is excellent at allowing the students to identify grammatical and sentence patterns within writing on their own and in a way that lecture or text instruction simply cannot.
—Mark Latta, Ivy Tech Community College
MyWritingLab enhances students' grammatical skills. I like it because of the independence it gives me as an instructor, as many assignments are self graded. Students enjoy the online component of it, as they like using computers to complete assignments.
—Vicky Kalivitis, West Valley College
There is greatest value in having the ability to tie a student's Study Plan to the student's true areas of need (as discovered in the diagnostic pre-test). By focusing the student on his or her area(s) of need and by eliminating topics in which the student has demonstrated mastery, I was able to eliminate the "busy work" that so often frustrates students who already feel "behind" their peers and friends who are taking the standard Freshman English composition course.
—Randy Maxson, Grace College
It provides a great tool for the grammar instruction, and remediation, but most of all it provides an inter-active environment for revision.
—Charles Young, Bethel Park High School
My favorite aspect of this product is the immediate feedback it gives students on grammar and punctuation exercises. Students enjoy the hands-on approach and feel a sense of accomplishment when they master a topic. The three levels -- Recall, Apply, and Write -- allow students to first practice mechanics in isolation and then build on those skills. I use the video clips and Recall exercises in class, and the students work on Recall and Apply exercises in our Writing Lab and at home.
—Susan Todd, Jefferson College
My working adult students appreciated the flexibility of being able to do their lab work anywhere they had internet access and at any time and not having to come to the lab to do their assignments.
—Melissa Rayborn, Valencia Community College
The students are challenged and respond to that challenge. They become more computer literate along with learning the concepts taught.
—David Webster, Marion Technical College
The students have enjoyed doing lab since using MyWritingLab.
— Karen Brown, Wallace Community College – Selma
My writing lab enhances a student's understanding of terms and concepts in the textbook, that need to be reinforced.
—Donna Lucas, Lawson State Community College-Bessemer
MyWritingLab allows THOSE students to go beyond what they could do if they were working in just a textbook alone.
—Ellen Gilmour, Genesee Community College
There are several features that are very important to the students that I teach including being able to submit essays to a tutor for comments before I grade the finished essay, having the individualized lesson plans to strengthen weak areas of their writing skills, and the focused topics work wonders to help them stayed focused on each individual essay that is written for the entire semester.
—Betty Dobry, Redlands Community College
{MyWritingLab] frees up more class time to work with the students rather than doing basic grammar and writing instruction. Also, students who already have mastery of set skills do not have to sit through a mini lesson on the skill; they can focus on the areas that they most need to focus. This would be extremely time consuming and inefficient if the instructor were to do it throughout the semester (create an individual study plan for each student and monitor progression through it.)
—Kelly Butterbaugh, Lehigh Carbon Community College
The best part of MWL is that students get instant feedback on their work and we don't have to spend a lot of class time checking homework exercises.
—Paula Khalaf, Lone Star College-Cy Fair
It is a very useful tool.
—Jeremy Owoh, Pulaski Technical College
Doing exercises online is attractive to students because they're always on the computer anyway - having this online supplement is much easier for them in order to do practice exercises.
—Shannon McBurnette-Arguelles, Texas A&M International University
It brings grammar practice alive. Well, as alive as it could be.
—Fredric Ball, Southwestern College
It helps me monitor student progress anytime and from anywhere. It instantly tells me what student is struggling.
—Pamela Smith, Macon State College
I liked it. The students who did the assigned exercises benefited from them. The ones who didn't were the ones who got hurt in the long run.
—Angela Messenger, Youngstown State University
The program is quite easy to use and allows me to monitor student progress as students are working.
—Christy Cardwell, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College
I find my students are more likely to do on line assignments. I particularly like giving them the option to improve their grades by having several sets for many of the activities.
—Linda Noblin, Cedar Valley College
When students do the MyWritingLab work, I do see significant improvement in their grammar skills.
—Francie Quaas-Berryman, Cerritos College
A wonderful tool for all teachers.
—Serge Laraque, San Joaquin Valley College
I believe that it is a tremendous help to student learning.
—Linda Landes, Owens Community College
What comes to mind when I hear MyWritingLab? Studying, reviewing, learning, and more learning. MyWritingLab helped me in many aspects of writing. One way that it was helpful was the Applysection of MyWritingLab. In Apply, I was put on the line to test my skills and find out where my strengths and weaknesses were, which helped me become a better person academically and made me feel better about myself, because I knew that my writing would be clear and mistake-free to the reader.
—Luis Nunez
I am a freshman at Pima Community College. I started using MyWritingLab a couple weeks into the semester. MyWritingLab taught me things on writing that I had no clue about. It helped me with run-ons and comma splices. It helped me understand what those were, and how I could prevent them from being in my paper. I thought the Recalls helped me the best. It showed the right and the wrong answer, so when you missed it, it would show you the right answer.
—Joseph Joey
It helped me work on some of the grammar things that I didn’t know. It gave me some exercises that were helpful and if I didn’t get a good grade on it, it would let me try again.
