Instructor Impressions: Student Learning Path

"With MyWritingLab, I was able to customize the student achievement and learning." Hear what these five instructors have to say about MyWritingLab—how it has helped them and their students.

"We like MyWritingLab because it's internet-based, it is flexible and computerized, and it allows students to work at their own pace."

When I first learned that our English and reading curriculum redesign would encompass web-based curriculum and assessment, I was hesitant and wondered if I would enjoy this type of teaching pedagogy. However, once I started to not only understand the functions of MyWritingLab as they related to our goals for our redesigned curriculum, I also discovered that MyWritingLab was an answer to curriculum woes that we didn't even realize we needed. In fact, in one semester alone, my pass rate is the best that is has been in six years and my students have been positive and ambitious all semester. As students learned the system, as well as the content, their confidence levels rose exponentially. Being able to have instant feedback and the opportunity to re-test, put the 'aha' moment on self-discovery and what it means to truly study and learn.
— Dawn Bailey-Cable, Instructor, Eastern Gateway Community College

MyWritingLab plays an integral role in the success of my students. From the pretest to the post test, students are always pleasantly surprised — and proud — to see how much they have accomplished through the individualized study plan that this program offers. Additionally, I am able to very conveniently track student progress and provide intervention as necessary. It is my belief that MyWritingLab allows my students to be more successful in my courses.
— Elizabeth Andrews, Professor, Developmental Writing, South Florida Community College, Humanities/Academic Foundations

Prior to using MyWritingLab, I was not confident that each student had gotten a chance to review all aspects of grammar and writing techniques so that they would be successful at the next level which is freshman composition at our school. In 16 weeks, it is so difficult to cover all of the material. However, with MyWritingLab, I know that my students have been giving opportunities to work in the areas that we cover in class as well as other lessons that we don't cover which are on MyWritingLab. I have a "layering" philosophy which means that I like to "layer" a lesson with lecture, homework, group and class work as well as online activities. The MyWritingLab program allows me to offer this layer for each grammar and writing lesson. Over the years, my students have shown great progress following their work with the MyWritingLab modules. I can see students have "a-ha" moments when they have finished their MyWritingLab lessons. The students who do not finish their MyWritingLab assignments are often not as confident with the information.
— Susan Austin, Instructor and Director of Academic Enrichment, Johnston Community College

MyWritingLab has allowed our students to take control over their learning. The program gives them individualized help and provides a safe environment to practice their newly learned skills. As a result, our students feel more confident about their writing. Because of the progression of learning encouraged by MyWritingLab, students internalize the information more effectively than a traditional lecture.
— Randi Brummett, Lecturer, CSU, Bakersfield

MyWritingLab enables graduating high school students as well as the non-traditional older students to be successful. The technology component of MWL is so user friendly, both types of students quickly learn to navigate the program. In fact, it is not unusual to see students becoming peer tutors for their classmates while explaining certain features. Since MyWritingLab develops individual learning paths, the student is always in control of his own learning and progress. With this kind of active student engagement, the teacher truly becomes the facilitator of learning.
— Donna Butler, Academic Readiness Coordinator, Owensboro Community & Technical College

MyWritingLab has had a definite impact on my students' writing and grammar skills. Many of my students are deficient in basic grammar and writing skills; however, through the use of MyWritingLab most of my students improved their skill level tremendously. It is a user friendly program, both for students as well as for instructors, and allows students to engage with the material in a multi-media environment. The program is learner centered and works well with the constructivist pedagogical approach.
— Mandy Davis, Instructional Specialist/Adjunct Faculty, Somerset Community College

I have found MyWritingLab to be an invaluable asset to our developmental writing program. Many students are weak in grammar; MyLab has provided the reinforcement of my teaching for the students. The program provides an individualized approach for mastery; yet, it can also be used as a teaching tool for the entire class. Students soon realize they always have a reliable tutoring source for any problems they may encounter.
— Susan Gronert, Associate Professor, Daytona State College

My students are now more responsible for their own learning. I also have saved time in the classroom. MyWritingLab serves as a teaching tool. Students work on the topics, and when someone is having trouble, I can single them out and work one-on-one with them, rather than taking time out of the class to explain it to everyone.
— Brooke Hughes, English Instructor, California State University, Bakersfield

MyWritingLab has allowed me, as an instructor, to meet my students' specific needs in a more timely manner and with more success. I can look at the diagnostic, and I can see that I don't have to spend 15 minutes on parallelism if 30/35 of my students mastered it. I can focus in on the few students who are having trouble with that topic. It really saves me time and allows me to help my students more individually.
— Brooke Hughes, English Instructor, California State University, Bakersfield

Pearson's MyWritingLab and MyWritingLab have given my students to opportunity to individually tailor aspects of their reading and writing courses to their abilities, while challenging them to increase proficiency. What my students love about MyLabs is the chance to work on concepts at their own pace and receive immediate feedback. As an instructor who teaches 11-week terms, this immediate feedback and individualized study has significant benefits to the way I pace my courses.
— Adon Arnett, Instructor, Portland Community College

MyLabs are an excellent tool for instructors. They supplement instruction and provide students with the ease of review and practice at their pace. Students tend to like the control they feel when working at their own pace.
— Maria Johnson, Faculty, DeKalb Technical College

MyWritingLab and MyWritingLab have really increased success in my classroom for the students who finish their labs. My students really like the MyLabs because they feel they are playing an active role in their learning. They get immediate feedback instead of waiting until the next class session for me to grade and pass back their papers. MyLabs provide a concrete example for the student who is a visual learner.
— Bobbie Egloff, Adjunct Faculty, Ivy Tech Community College

The best features offered in the MyLab products are the review materials. If students are absent the day I cover a new concept, they can log on, read the lesson, and watch the videos. For online students, the review materials lighten some of the students' burden of teaching themselves the material. For nontraditional students, MyLabs become a less intimidating way to build technology into their new academic program.
— Maggie Brown, Lead instructor, developmental studies English and reading, Lenoir Community College

It sometimes takes a super heroic effort to get students to write better but with the help of MyLabs, students can take control of their learning and improve their writing. All of the composition MyLabs are great for allowing students to work on problem areas at their own pace. The Recall and Apply really give students the chance to not only see what they know about a topic but more importantly to put it into practice by detecting errors and then applying editing and writing skills. The video tutorials are great to introduce topics to students. Today's students rely on the Internet. They want to have access to items at a click of a button. They also want immediate feedback that an instructor may not always be able to provide. So between the active learning strategies and the MyLabs, students can improve their writing.
— Kennette Crockett, Instructor, Harold Washington College
